Louise O’Sullivan

Candidate for Mayor of Montreal

Renewing our pride in Montreal

The next municipal elections to be held on November 1st, 2009 represent a unique opportunity for all Montrealers interested in shaping the City’s future. Louise O' Sullivan, the mayoral candidate under the banner of Équipe Louise O' Sullivan Parti Montreal Ville-Marie, is strongly committed to reforming the municipal administration from the top down.

Joining countless Montrealers disillusioned with the negligence, apathy and poor governance of the current municipal administration, Louise O'Sullivan, a vibrant business woman and a former member of the City Hall’s Executive Committee, plans to inject a strong sense of leadership into municipal politics. Together with her team, she has set an ambitious agenda which aims to restore the pride of Montrealers in their City, while facing the challenges head-on.

A business woman and a former elected official

Louise O'Sullivan formed her own recruitment firm – Les Conseillers en Personnel Jacques Cartier Inc. – thirty years ago. Today, it is considered to be one of Montreal’s top corporate search and recruitment firms.

After being elected in November 2001 under the Gérald Tremblay’s party, Louise O'Sullivan got appointed to the Executive Committee; between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2004, she was responsible for the social development/revenue security and the Business Centre portfolios. While on the Executive Committee, she spearheaded partnerships with the Montréal Police Services, Health Montréal, and various social agencies and community groups involved with issues ranging from prostitution, to homelessness, graffiti, and street gangs.

In September 2004, her first-hand involvement with women’s issues drove her to establish the City of Montreal Women’s Council comprised of (15) women from across the island.

Educating Montreal’s future generations is tantamount to moving forward. Louise O'Sullivan’s collaboration with Montreal’s universities was instrumental to their expansion. She supported the John Molson School of Business - Concordia University’s development plans and, in collaboration with the Église au toit rouge, was actively involved in enlarging the parcel of land adjacent to UQAM’s Engineering building. She financially supported the McGill University School of Architecture’s professional study group dedicated to Montreal’s downtown development centered around Peel Street.

Louise O’Sullivan’ resigned from the Executive committee in December 2004; her disagreement with Tremblay administration’s approach to governance was profound. She then served out the remainder of her term as an independent City Councillor representing the district of Peter-McGill in the borough of Ville-Marie where she had been elected originally. In January 2006, Louise O' Sullivan created her own party, Montréal Ville-Marie.

In 1996, Louise O’Sullivan’s inspiration to improve Montrealers’ social and personal circumstances motivated her to create the Cartier Heritage Foundation. To date, the Foundation has helped thousands of families and children in need. She was President of the Regroupement des Femmes Cadres du Québec, an honorary patron of the Chaînon and the Pointe-à-Callière Museum, the past board member of the Geordie Productions, the Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montréal and partner of the Grands Ballets Canadiens.

A former Secretary-Treasurer of the Société de développement de Montréal (SDM), Louise O'Sullivan has served on the boards of numerous Montreal institutions, such as: the Comité de gestion stratégique sur la sécurité et la qualité du milieu de vie, the Conseil régional de l’Ile de Montréal (CRDIM, the Fonds Ville-Marie, the Table de concertation du Vieux-Montréal and the Villes et Villages en Santé. She is an active member of Montreal’s Mount Stephen and University Clubs, as well as of the Association des résidents du Château de Montebello.

« The future of Montreal begins today »

Louise O'Sullivan would like nothing better than to be able to represent those who are eager to put an end to Montreal’s stagnation. Her forward-looking vision of Montreal paints a picture of the City that attracts investors, students, artists and tourists from around the world, where the spirit of entrepreneurship is encouraged, where vitality and creativity are abundant. Louise O'Sullivan wants to empower the municipal government’s leaders, so they can face the challenges facing the City and be able to respond to different issues affecting its citizens. These range from the quality of services provided to the public which must be backed by a prudent fiscal budget management, undertaking neighbourhood clean-ups and beautification, heritage conservation, preservation of green spaces, improving the quality of life, and, finally, economic growth in harmony with good environmental practices.

Born to a French mother and an Irish father, Louise O’Sullivan, a perfectly bilingual Montrealer, has named her party the Équipe Louise O’Sullivan Parti Montréal-Ville-Marie in memory of the French settlers who laid the foundation for the City, but more importantly, because while reflecting the diversity of Montreal, her party is committed to represent the public interest at large.

Louise O'Sullivan believes that Montreal has a lot to offer. She wants to reinvent the City as an economically viable, ambitious contender on the world stage. She wants to re-make it into one of the most livable and enjoyable cities in the world, where the quality of life is good for its citizens. Montrealers deserve an ambitious municipal leadership. Louise O’Sullivan’s planned renewal of Montreal will be accompanied by the municipal government reform. In order for the citizens to have full trust in their elected municipal officials, their ethics must be exemplary. Louise O’Sullivan plans call for a municipal government for the people. She envisions the City where the creative forces are alive.

Now in the bottom quarter of the rankings for the best-managed and most attractive Canadian cities, the only mention of Montreal in The Economist is the result of its municipal council being mired in scandals. This must change. Louise O'Sullivan wants to channel her boundless energy and enthusiasm for Montreal into public service for all Montrealers. With Louise O'Sullivan, the long-awaited future of Montreal begins today.
